About Croatia

Croatia is a Central European and Mediterranean country. It is located next to the densely populated and industrially developed European countries. Many international transport routes pass right through Croatia.

The importance of geographic location of the Republic of Croatia is also enhanced the Adriatic Sea, the northernmost bay of the Mediterranean, which is closest to the central part of the European continent.

Croatia shares borders with Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Zagreb, capital of Croatia, is located on the Sava river to the north-west of the country. Zagreb, with its population of 770,000 inhabitants, is the cultural, political and economic center of the country.

Society of the Republic of Croatia is a parliamentary democracy, as are most countries in Western and Central Europe. After changing the Constitution in November of 2000, the semi-presidential system was transformed into a pure parliamentary system.

The main economic activities in the Republic of Croatia include: agriculture, food, textiles, wood, metallurgy, chemical and petrochemical industries, electric power production, shipbuilding and tourism.

Tourism is Croatia's largest resource. The coastline is preserved, with clean blue sea and cities full of historical sights. Croatia has 8 national parks of outstanding beauty and five heritage sites preserved by UNESCO: the historical city of Trogir, Diocletian's Palace in Split, the old town of Dubrovnik, St. James's cathedral in Šbenik, Euphrasios Basilica in Porec and the Plitvice Lakes National Park.
